HOKU MEA™

Our core products are Hoku MEAs. A single MEA, typically called a 3-layer MEA, consists of a proton exchange membrane placed between two electrodes, the anode and cathode, with a layer of precious metal or alloy catalyst such as platinum between each electrode and the membrane. In some cases, the MEA is comprised of five layers, including a porous material to diffuse gases across each electrode, a 5-layer MEA, and in others an integrated seal or gasket is also included on each side, making it a 7-layer MEA. We can manufacture our products as 3-layer, 5-layer and 7-layer MEAs. Our current MEA technology has properties, such as reduced fuel cross-over, that are advantageous for micro fuel cell applications, including direct methanol fuel cells.

HOKU MEMBRANE ®

The key components of our Hoku MEAs are our Hoku Membranes, which are hydrocarbon-based proton exchange membranes. We do not generally sell Hoku Membrane as a stand-alone product; however, we have sold Hoku Membranes separately for sampling to PEM fuel cell system OEMs that have developed electrode or gas diffusion materials or MEA assembly processes of their own.
